New Fascia, New Audio Mark the 2016 VW Jetta GLI

The Volkswagen Jetta GLI, sedan sibling to the enthusiast-favorite GTI hatchback, is getting a few tweaks for 2016. The Jetta got a fairly comprehensive makeover as a late-arriving 2015 model, so don’t expect a whole lot of newness here, and you won’t be disappointed.

-

The biggest change to the 2016 Jetta GLI is its new front-fascia treatment. The honeycomb grille’s red underline now extends into the headlamp cluster, which gets additional LED elements. Meanwhile, the lower air intake is shallower and wider-looking; its chrome surround is gone but there’s a body-colored trim strip along the bottom; and the standard fog lamps are more square and less upright. Taken together, the changes make the front end appear lower and wider. At the rear, the bumper cover now hints at a diffuser, and the twin exhaust tips are chromed. The standard wheels remain the 18-inch Mallory design on both the SE and SEL models.

Inside, VW switches to its latest, “MIB 2″ touch-screen infotainment system, which again incorporates VW Car-Net (an app-based interface that can communicate vehicle status to the owner, provide automatic crash notification or summon roadside assistance, and keep tabs on the car’s speed and location when driven by someone else). Post-crash automatic braking—which seeks to mitigate the effects of any secondary collision—is a new standard feature. 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Otherwise, the GLI’s equipment continues as before, starting with the 210-hp 2.0-liter turbo four paired with either a six-speed stick or a six-speed DSG automatic. SE models are fairly well outfitted, with a sport suspension, a sunroof, a Fender audio system, a backup camera, a power driver’s seat, heated seats, V-Tex upholstery with red piping, keyless ignition, and Bluetooth. The SEL adds navigation, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and bixenon adaptive headlights.

-

Expect the new-ish GLI to roll into showrooms in August or September. VW is mum on pricing for now, but we wouldn’t expect it to stray far from today’s $27,740 (GLI SE) and $30,100 (GLI SEL).
