Despite rumors that this year’s U.S. Grand Prix would not return to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, the show will go on. Who saved the day? Unlikely as it sounds, it just might be superstar Taylor Swift.
-The singer/songwriter and Grammy winner will be headlining this year’s GP race at COTA, with a huge concert blowout on Saturday, October 22, the day before the race. As her only public concert currently scheduled in 2016, the T-Swift show seems poised to help boost the GP’s attendance numbers that have declined since the Austin circuit began hosting the event in 2012.
-This announcement also quashes rumblings that other U.S. circuits, including Watkins Glen in New York, were in consideration to host the GP. FIA director Charlie Whiting had made a visit to Watkins Glen last week, but that turned out to be unrelated to GP planning. Funding issues had called another COTA Grand Prix into question, as an administrative change cut cash flow from a Texas Major Events trust fund. But apparently the race organizers figured out the money issues. Snagging Taylor Swift surely isn’t cheap, but hopefully she’ll bring in more revenue to balance the books.
